A Project Manager is required to work within the Atkins Defence Land & Marine consultancy, working with clients across the Defence Industry and the MoD. A Junior Project Manager (trainee) would be considered for the right applicant showing the right aptitudes and desire to pursue a career in Technical Project Management. Responsibilities The Project Manager will support the business on a range of projects, assisting Atkins and its clients organise and deliver complex programmes of technical engineering work. This role will initially be focused in the Land (Army) domain, working with the MoD on a large (£multi-billion) programme to procure future medium weight fighting vehicles. Core activities will include; the definition and co-ordination of programmes of technical work (internal and external to Atkins), employment of recognised PM best practice to ensure the successful delivery of projects, work packages and contracts with sub-contracting organisations, providing PM consultancy to internal and external customers, and assisting Atkins Defence build upon its strong reputation for Project and Programme Management. The incumbent will be exposed to a wide variety of stakeholders, and will require an understanding of the engineering design process and systems engineering, as well as project management techniques. The candidate should also show an advanced appreciation of the commercial aspects of engineering, through experience of planning and contracting for technical work. The Project Manager may be required to take part in strategic level discussions, and provide insights and advice on programme related issues to inform our clients. Requirements Mandatory Requirements of the role Degree Qualified in Engineering or similar (scientific) subject. Chartered Engineer, or similar level in an appropriate discipline. Project Management experience on several projects within the last 5 years. Experience in or exposure to more than one of the following: Design Process – complex systems or products in Defence or Assumptions management Risk management Options analysis and assessment Good interpersonal skills, working with staff/clients at many levels often under high pressure Ability to digest complex information and brief it in a suitable format for senior stakeholders Flexible working approach, with evidence of an ability to react to new information/demands from senior management on an ad-hoc basis Experience of Systems Engineering, engineering design processes, technical consultancy work A sound understanding of the principles and philosophy behind Project Management (more than just a set of tools) An ability to lead in thought and discussions on technical and project-related subjects An ordered and structured approach to organising information, activities and resources Excellent interpersonal skills, commensurate with the role of a consultant, mentor, leader and team player. The following requirements are desirable but not essential: Formal Project Management Training Detailed knowledge of schedule, cost and risk management and the dependencies between each domain The use of risk analysis (qualitative and quantitative) in providing confidence of deadlines/deliverables Confident when speaking to large groups of people and can provide a convincing argument Familiar with the DE&S, MoD Procurement Process and assurance activities Engineering background to provide an appreciation of the performance elements of each potential Programme Option Additional Information Some work outside normal office hours may be necessary. Travel to and from client sites and/or temporary secondment to client’s offices may also be required. SECURITY – All candidates must be in a position to obtain UK security clearance to SC level. Additional restrictions may apply on certain defence programmes.
